Super Fly
Exclusive: Fly In The Loaf crowned Best Pub in Britain by BBC listeners

Despite its unlovely name, there are plenty of people who love the Fly In The Loaf.

So many, in fact, that Liverpool Confidential can exclusively reveal that the Hardman Street drinking spot has today beaten off competition from all over the UK in a long-running Radio Five Live poll to find Britain's top pub.

In recent weeks, The Weekend News on Five Live has been discussing what makes a pub a great pub, and listeners across Britain and beyond have been nominating some of their favourites. And today BBC producers could contain their excitement no longer and called us up to share the news that the Fly is the winner.

“Quite simply, I serve the best beer in the North West,” Fly in the Loaf Manager Dominic Hornsby unblinkingly asserted when we quizzed him more closely on the matter. “I am completely certain about that.”

Big talk. But with the delightful Okells ales on draught and hundreds of different bottles to choose from, the former Kirklands has clearly become a boozer for the beer lover who knows how to drink like an adult - and there were quite a few having a few when we nipped in.

“The secret if a good pub is to not try to be all things to all people,” the delighted Dominic remarked with a sagacity belying his years. “We are all about good beer and that's why people like us.”

The Fly was the only real urban beast to make it to the final four, its three rivals were in Long Itchington (mosquito bites, anyone?), Winchester and Stoke Mandeville. It polled more than 39% of the vote and the result will be announced on the show to listeners this Saturday after 8pm.

Prize for the Fly? Well, the BBC never did stretch themselves to anything much beyond a Blankety Blank cheque book and pen, nevertheless the victorious one will find that The Weekend News is being broadcast live from their gaff, complete with a lot of cables, come Saturday 26 May.

Producers say. “We'll use it as an opportunity to tell some stories from the area too, and to find out what issues are bothering pub goers,” and a list of parish notables are being lined up to appear.

A radio show live from Hardman Street on a Saturday night? Could make lively listening. Stay tuned.

Under the table says.." Huzza! Well done Mr. Hornsby!"

Andrew says.." One of the best pubs for great beers and ales in Liverpool. Cheers also to Dominic for the Aventinus glass. Top bloke."
