The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words
Thurs 12 Nov: Council to axe 1,000 jobs; MP Kilfoyle may face investigation, boat show hope and Beyonce

LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL IS TO AXE 1,000 JOBS in the next three years because of a “looming” financial crisis, trade unions say. Facing a £120m gap in its budget over the next five years, Liverpool City Council said would work closely with unions to manage job losses as sensitively as possible when shedding 1,000 of its 10,000 workforce. Speaking at a conference with 19 council leaders, the leader, Warren Bradley said, “We have always said we will work to try to sustain public sector jobs. Unfortunately there will be some casualties in this.”

AN INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW may be held in Liverpool in 2011. The Liverpool Boat Show would be held in the historic surroundings of Albert Dock, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. The show has secured major funding from the EU and now further support is needed to secure a date in the calendar, with a preview event being held on December 3.

WALTON MP PETER KILFOYLE MAY BE INVESTIGATED after he commissioned research on the alleged failings of the Liverpool “city-region” from a firm run by his daughter. The Parliamentary Commissioner of Standards is now being urged to investigate whether Peter Kilfoyle used taxpayer funds without declaring a possible conflict of interest. The right-wing Sunlight Centre, run by blogger 'Guido Fawkes' made the complaint, but Mr Kilfoyle has laughed it off.

SUPERSTAR BEYONCE BROUGHT HER TOUR to Liverpool last night with tickets going on eBay for £500 . Kicking-off the I Am… show with Crazy In Love at the Arena, it was the second time this year the ex-Destiny’s Child singer has been in the city. She performed another sell-out show in June.
